This 8 week class is designed for anyone new to throwing on the potter's wheel, those wishing to polish up on rusty skills, or as a follow up to any other beginner wheel class. We will overview the entire wheel throwing process with hands-on demonstrations in each class. Focusing on Bowls and cylinders, the building blocks of wheel work, we cover all the basics and more, such as handles and decorative carving. There will be plenty of time for one on one Q&A, assistance, and individualized demonstrations. I am a very thorough and encouraging teacher, and I love to see students progress!
This class gets you in the studio for weekly instruction, as well as access to 4 practice lab sessions per week, especially designed for enrolled students.
The final class will be a review and discussion lasting only 1 ½ hours. All other classes are 2 ½ hours each.

Functionally decorative portraits
(handbuilding & sculpture-all levels but some experience suggested)
with Giovanni Pesce
Saturdays, 10:00-12:30 PM
7 week session: Sept. 27th-Nov. 8th
-
All levels but some experience is suggested!
Ages 16+
This seven-week course explores the intersection of function, decoration, and personal narrative through handbuilt ceramic vessels that incorporate sculptural portraiture. Students will build on foundational ceramic techniques to create functional objects—such as mugs, bowls, and cookie jars—that feature expressive and symbolic portraits or other representational forms. Each student is expected to bring in photographs of people to work from. Images of themselves or people they know are encouraged to support the development of a personal narrative. However,—they may also draw inspiration from living or non-living objects that hold symbolic or emotional significance. The intention of the course is to create work that is equally decorative and functional, while also expressing a unique artistic voice.
One 25lb of clay will be provided. Recommended to bring:
A hand or dish towel
An apron

made for glaze
(Intermediate/Advanced wheel and glazing) with Kate Bevington
Sundays, 4:00-6:30 PM
8 week session: Sept. 14th-Nov. 16th (no class Oct. 12th and Nov. 9th)
-
For ages 16+
In this intermediate to advanced course, students will make pots on the wheel or by hand with the end goal of glazing for special effects. We will begin by investigating glaze combinations and making glaze goals, followed by creating pots with different forms and surface textures in clay. One class will be dedicated to throwing pots off the hump to create small vessels for glaze practice, (or making several small hand-built pots.) Attention will be given to trimming and decorating the leather hard pot with glaze effects in mind. More than half of the class will be dedicated to experimentation with glazing and sharing what we have made.
This course has 3 requirements: 1) Participants need to be proficient in centering and throwing OR hand-building a variety of shapes independently (size does not matter). This course will not cover beginning throwing or handbuilding skills. 2) If you take this class you will be asked to participate at least once a week at the labs (or work at a home studio between classes) so that more class time can be spent trimming, decorating, underglazing and glazing. 3) Students will be required to take notes and share what they have done so that everyone can learn from others’ successes (and inevitable mistakes).
The goal is to become a better potter by working with intention, and to find the joy in the glazing process, starting from the very first steps of making a work in clay.
